wordpress.com launched
Wordpress.com, the website using the popular Wordpress.org software is
now open; an invitation is no longer required. I don't link to them
because they seem to be slashdotted now (but the url is obvious). The
bloggers talked a lot about them today, and probably the website didn't
anticipate such a peak load. Or it's just that this launch downtime
seems to be some sort of "default launch schema", whenever something
big goes out, it has to be down in order to teach the crowd some
respect. If this is a technique, then google should patent it
(</cynical>)
I guess an interesting topic is how Wordpress will transit from the *.org image WP has built to a *.com. Putting donations at a side, custom coding and some premium version are some ways to go. I hope they figure out a way that leaves the powerful open source breath untouched. It's now a very nice looking and flexible solution for server-side blogging, with many packages that achieve most of what a blogger needs.
Oh yes, one last notice. In their registration page, they could use the AJAX implementation that is present on blogHi's homepage. It saves a few clicks when selecting the domain name. One has to be logged out in order to see it.
